Day 1 post op lunchtime update

Overnight can only be described as very odd. I was incredibly uncomfortable from the pain in my neck and so many other parts hurting when I tried to adjust my position. Sleep was very disturbed as I was on 1/2 hourly obs until about 2am and then hourly. In between I was nodding off and waking up. I’m pretty she I nodded off while they were doing obs at least once. 😮 I think I reached the point that, whilst I was so frustrated with not being able to get comfortable, I’d nod off before it really started to bother me, and then the loop would start again.

It was oddly nice to watch the sun come up. Well, as much as I could see from the quadrangle I look over. I think I probably dozed a bit between then and about 6. The nurse noticed there was blood on the pillow behind my head so checked the wound and it had been leaking. One of the doctors came and removed the dressings, and confirmed I’d had a minor CSF leak. She cleaned it up and redressed it. It was interesting that when she was pressing the dressings on, it didn’t hurt anywhere near as much as I expected, either in my back or up my back. I’m not saying it didn’t hurt my neck, but given how it was without applying any pressure, I thought I’d be shouting a few choice words. 😀

When the surgeon’s team came to do their ward round they took a look at the dressing and felt it was all dry enough, and didn’t want to remove the dressing to check the wound itself so soon after it had been done. They’ve asked the nurses to keep an eye on it, and will come back to check the wound if the dressing is being changed.

For all the pain I’m in from my neck, and the disturbed night, I actually feel remarkably human already. Obviously still got a long way to go, but I’m feeling quite optimistic at this stage.

After the concern about dehydration yesterday and overnight, I seem to have gotten past that, and I’m now going through those wonderful urine bottles for bed at quite a rate. It’s a pain in the arse but has to be a good thing overall. 👍🏻

Visitors coming this afternoon so that will be lovely.
