Follow-up appointment

I had a call from from Mr S’s secretary on Thursday to say he had a cancellation in today’s clinic.

Saw Mr S in clinic.  The latest MRI shows that the spinal cord is swollen around the site of herniation.  He hasn’t seen that happen before and doesn’t know what is causing the swelling.  He suspects the cord may be snagging on the dural patch he put in.  Worst case it may have started to fuse with the patch.  He wants to book me in for further surgery to try to release the cord again.  Discussed options such as denervation, but he doesn’t think we should be considering that.  Surgery first and see what the outcome is before looking at other “last resort” options.  Suggested increasing my amitriptyline to 40 or 50mg, and he will write to the GP to recommend prescribing me another nerve drug, but weight gain is a side-effect.  Expectation is that surgery might be in April.
