An exercise fail

Take a day off, go for a nice bike ride then sit on our nice new decking in the sun and enjoy a beer … is what I thought to myself a couple of days ago. So I checked the weather forecast, checked my diary and planned my day.

It didn’t start quite as early as I’d intended as at about 11pm last night I felt the urge to play Modern Warfare, and so that was that for the next 3 hours. When I did eventually surface I set about putting some new pads in my cycle helmet and then got myself ready to head out for my first cycle ride in way too many months.

Unfortunately I’d barely got a mile when, as I rode along the cycle path that runs from Nursling Street to the OS building, a loop of safety tape blew out, hooked around the handlebars and high-sided me onto the ground. I landed squarely on my back and back of my head. Thankfully, in the absence of a useable water bottle, I’d put a bladder rucksack on, which did an excellent job of cushioning the blow – not that I don’t have any additional back pain, but i can’t imagine what it would be like if there’d been nothing more than my t-shirt to cushion me. As for my head, well suffice to say I’m so glad I had a helmet on, as it bares way more scars than I do. I don’t think I’ve got concussion, but the way I feel, I think I might have to give those beers a miss this afternoon.
